UFC 97 - Redemption by John Latimer Photography

UFC 102 Couture vs. Nogueira is going to be held from The Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon on August 29. The card features several crossroad matches that will determine the future of contenders in the heavyweight, light heavyweight and middleweight divisions. Before it's time for fight night, it's time to take a look at some UFC 102 predictions to see which fighters will emerge victorious.

I've gone undefeated with my last two UFC predictions, including 4-0 for UFC 100 and 4-0 for UFC 101. So without further adieu, here are my predictions for UFC 102 Couture vs. Nogueira.

UFC 102 Predictions: Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

The headline bout of the evening features an intriguing crossroads match between Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrido Nogueira. Couture hasn't fought in nearly a year, since his stoppage loss to Brock Lesnar. Nogueira fought at the end of 2008, surprisingly losing to Frank Mir via stoppage. While the winner gets another crack at the title, the loser will lose significant ground in the UFC heavyweight division.

Nogueira clearly has the advantage in terms of jiu-jitsu, however Couture's wrestling and ring generalship should allow him to keep the fight wherever he wants it to be. I expect Couture to move inside of Nogueira's longer reach and when the fight gets to the ground, he'll be the one on top unleashing the punishment. Nogueira however can take plenty of punishment for being stopped, so I expect this one to go to a decision.

Randy Couture wins by unanimous decision

UFC 102 Predictions: Keith Jardine vs. Thiago Silva

Keith Jardine has lost three of his last five fights, two of which came by knockout. However his competition has been top notch, and sandwiched between those losses are wins over Brandon Vera and Chuck Liddell. So which Keith Jardine will we see in his UFC 102 Couture vs. Nogueira match against Thiago Silva?

Silva is coming back from a loss against Lyoto Machida. But that's alright, because everyone thus far has lost to Machida. Silva has the power to end Jardine's night early, and big power is something that Jardine has showed himself to be susceptible to. I expect Jardine's awkward style to keep the fight close, potentially even in his favor until Silva catches up with him and finishes him off.

Thiago Silva wins by TKO in the second or third around.

UFC 102 Predictions: Nate Marquardt vs. Demian Maia

Demian Maia likes to choke people out. The undefeated fighter has five consecutive wins in the UFC, all coming from choke submissions. His hit list includes the likes of Chael Sonnen, Nate Quarry and Jason MacDonald.

Nate Marquardt though has all of the experience in the world, and is a complete fighter. He's huge and strong, and he trains with some of the best in the game. Marquardt is eager to earn another shot at middleweight champion Anderson Silva, and his consecutive stoppage wins over Wilson Gouveia and Martin Kampmann prove he's only getting better. Marquardt's strength and overall game will put an end to Maia's undefeated MMA record.

Nate Marquardt wins by TKO in the second round.

UFC 102 Predictions: Brandon Vera vs. Krzystof Soszynski

Since his return to actively fighting, Brandon Vera has not looked like the same fighter he once was. He at one point harbored real aspirations of winning both the heavyweight and light heavyweight crowns. Now he's fighting just to keep his career as a contender alive. Kryzstof Soszynski has a wealth of experience and trains with a great camp, but has yet to be tested against top talent in the Octagon.

I expect Vera's standup game and experience against top fighters to win the day over Kryzstof's strength and conditioning. Vera will tire late and Krzystof will pour on the pressure, but he'll able to survive the end of the fight and see the fight to a decision. Vera might not make it all the way back to the top, but he has this level of performance in him.

Brandon Vera wins by unanimous decision.

UFC 102 Predictions: Wilson Gouveia vs. James Irvin

When looking at this UFC 102 preview, Gouveia vs. Irvin has all of the makings of fight of the night. Both men have heavy hands, and both men like to be aggressive and go for the knockout. It's an important contest for each of them, as both are trying to rebound from stoppage losses in their last outings. Irvin hasn't fought in over a year since Anderson Silva demolished him, and Gouveia is coming off a loss to Nate Marquardt earlier this year.

While Irvin might have more power, Gouveia has the more complete game. If Irvin can't land a one shot KO punch at some point, Gouveia will be able to pick and choose his attacking opportunities. Of course, he'll also have the option of taking the fight to the ground where his submission and jiu-jitsu skills would be vastly superior to James Irvin's. Anything can happen in a fight where both guys have power and like to slug it out, but I think Gouveia's more well rounded game will win the day.

Wilson Gouveia wins by submission.

The UFC 102 Couture vs. Nogueira fight card is stacked with lots of big names and hopefully these UFC 102 predictions will serve you well.

In the first six months of this year it looked like the UFC were an unstoppable force.

UFC 100 in July in particular appeared to have raised the bar significantly, gaining widespread media coverage and bringing in record breaking pay per view numbers. When the next event in August also exceeded expectations it looked like they were ready to welcome in the next decade in style.

Since then their luck has changed however. The last few months has seen the worst injury crisis in the company’s history, including four of their five champions (Georges St.Pierre, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida and Brock Lesnar) being forced onto the sidelines due to illness and injury. An unprecedented number of other fighters on the roster have suffered a similar fate.

Problems with other big name stars have complicated matters. Topping the list was undoubtedly Quinton Rampage Jackson who pulled out of a blockbuster fight with fellow Ultimate Fighter season 10 coach Rashad Evans to star as B.A Baracus in The A-Team.

A contract dispute with Dan Henderson, who would eventually leave for rival promotion Strikeforce as a result, further limited the promotions ability to put on the kind of star-studded events fans had become accustomed to.

Meanwhile Strikeforce have stepped forward as a potential challenger to the UFC. Along with the recent acquisition of Henderson, the promotion also managed to sign one of the world’s best pound for pound stars, Fedor Emelianenko ahead of the UFC, formed an alliance with Japanese promotion DREAM and had a successful debut on network television via CBS in november, pulling in an average of 4 million viewers.

The contrast in fortunes between the two promotions in recent months has led to criticism for the UFC from some fans, but is it really justified?

While Strikeforce have undoubtedly had an impressive six months, it could be argued that the the UFC’s recent woes only further highlights their status as the sports market leader.

To see why lets look at some of the affected events in recent times:

UFC 105 – UFC 108 (Originally scheduled headline fights):

* UFC 105: BJ Penn Vs Diego Sanchez (lightweight title fight)
UFC 106: Brock Lesnar Vs Shane Carwin (heavyweight title fight)
UFC 107: Rampage Jackson Vs Rashad Evans
UFC 108: Anderson Silva Vs Vitor Belfort (middleweight title fight)

If these bouts had went ahead as originally planned the UFC would have been on course for a stellar end to the year (UFC 108 airs on Jan 2nd of next year, but we’ll include it here for the sake of argument).

Penn – Sanchez would have given UK fans the chance to see a title fight on their own turf, and those in the US would have been able to watch the fight for free on Spike TV.

Meanwhile Lesnar – Carwin was a title fight that had been widely predicted to be a major ratings winner for the UFC, while the hype emerging from the 10th season of TUF 10, which brought record ratings on Spike, suggested that Rampage – Evans was also set to be a major success.

Though Anderson Silva isn’t as bankable a star as some of the others mentioned, his title fight with Belfort certainly had all the makings of a high quality match-up that would be well received among fans.

Of course with the exception of the Penn Vs Sanchez fight, all of the above bouts ended up being canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. Let’s take a closer look at their replacments:

UFC 105 – UFC 108 (Re-arranged headline bouts):

* UFC 105: Randy Couture Vs Brandon Vera
UFC 106: Forrest Griffin Vs Tito Ortiz 2
UFC 107: BJ Penn Vs Diego Sanchez (lightweight title fight)
UFC 108: Rashad Evans Vs Thiago Silva

While certainly a step down from the planned fights, considering the chaos going on behind the scenes this is a respectable line-up. In each event they have a recognized star who has headlined a UFC event before, and at least one former champion.

It’s also worth pointing out that in the case of UFC 106 and UFC 108 they didn’t even have to look far to find a solid replacement – these fighters were already scheduled to fight in the co-main events on the cards in question.

Bearing in mind this is the UFC at what many would consider to be their lowest ebb in recent times, it’s hard to be overly critical about how they have performed.

Consider how Strikeforce would fare under similar circumstances.

For example, what would happen if Fedor, like Brock Lesnar, had pulled out of his fight with Brett Rogers in November at short notice and was now out indefinitely? Strikeforce’s relationship with CBS is still at a fragile stage and with so much of the success of the event hinging on the Russian star, it would have been a disaster for the promotion.

Also consider if they had to abandon three of their next four headline bouts and find replacements at short notice. Would they fare any better than the UFC has? I think most people would acknowledge that they would not.

It’s also worth remembering we’re only talking about the major fights here. The UFC’s recent injury troubles stem far beyond that, yet they have been able to make the necessary replacement and continue on regardless.

Strikeforce on the other hand have a smaller roster, though they are doing an admirable job of trying to fill it out. Even so, when Trevor Prangley pulled out of his bout with Robbie Lawler due to injury at short notice, the bout was scrapped altogether, meaning only four main card fights aired instead of five.

Along with a deeper roster, the UFC also still holds much of the talent as well, which they have built up over a number of years.

For instance, while Strikeforce have the best heavyweight fighter at their disposal in Fedor Emelianenko, they do not have a long list of top quality opponents for him to fight, as is highlighted by the fact that Fabricio Werdum is now being lined up as his next opponent.

Alistair Overeem hasn’t fought for the promotion in over two years and is apparently in no hurry to return, while Dan Henderson has his hands full contending both the middleweight and light heavyweight titles in the near future.

Contrast that with the UFC’s heavyweight division where Shane Carwin, Frank Mir, Antonio Nogueira and Cain Velasquez are all standing in line for either a shot at current champion Brock Lesnar if he recovers fully from his recent illness, or a run at the interim title if he does not.

It’s perhaps telling that the fighter who appears to be just out of the title picture at this stage in the UFC is Junior Dos Santos, who took just over a minute to defeat Fabricio Werdum when they fought under the UFC’s banner in 2008.

Strikeforce has wisely acquired some fighters who could be the stars of the future in the sport, such as Gegard Mousasi, ‘King Mo’ Lawal and Bobby Lashley, but only time will tell whether they can reach their full potential where they are, and if they do, whether Strikeforce can hold on to them.

In the mean time Strikeforce have proved that they can put on a good show, like the Evolution event which provided plenty of entertainment on Saturday night. The trick now is to maintain that quality and consistency over an extended period of time, and look to improve upon it as they go along.

2010 will be a big year for both promotions. Strikeforce will hold 20 events via Showtime, CBS and Pay Per View which will be a major test for them, and give a good indication of how robust their roster actually is. Their next event on CBS is scheduled for April, and good ratings their are vitally important to their longer term plans.

Meanwhile the UFC are set to expand into new markets like Australia and The Middle East, and will welcome back a number of their major stars back from injury in the early months of the year.

That should lead to several stacked cards from the promotion, and the opportunity to remind people why they are still the biggest show in town.

According to Yahoo Sports, Brock Lesnar has been forced to withdraw from his title defense against Shane Carwin at UFC 106. According to Dana White, Lesnar had been sick for 3 and-a-half weeks with the flu and has been unable to train. Since he would no longer be at his best for the Nov.21 fight in Las Vegas, he decided to postpone it.

Despite Carwin calling out Lesnar for his past several times during the build to the big matchup according to FightLine, he had no criticism for Brock when asked about the situation. “My heart just sank, as you can imagine,” Carwin said. “Hopefully, we'll get it rescheduled soon.”

Carwin also said on his twitter, “I had H1N1 myself and I understand how devastating it can be”. (It should be noted that White said that they don't think Lesnar has the swine flu). Carwin also confirmed on his twitter that the fight would be reschedules for January 2nd, which is UFC 108, a card that already features Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva, Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Junior dos Santos, and Tyson Griffin vs. Jim Miller.

While UFC 108 looks to be in good shape, this leaves UFC 106 without its main event. UFC's website has already moved the original co-main event, Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin to the main event slot, and is now billing UFC 106 as “Ortiz vs. Griffin 2″. This still leaves the card as a whole a bit lacking on starpower, but according to MMAJunkie, there is a chance that Antonio Nogueira vs. Luis Cane will be added to the card, which should give the card some much needed star power with Brock Lesnar out. Eitherway, Lesnar is proven to seriously boost buyrates, so there is almost no chance that UFC 106 now does as well financially as it was originally expect to, though that financial success should now transfer over to UFC 108.

Now the big hope for every UFC fan is that Lesnar gets over his bout with the flu quickly so the fight isn't postponed again, and so that Lesnar can be 100% for his high profile title defense.

Watch Avatar Online Free

If Avatar were the most expensive movie of all-time, there might be some responsibility to score the biggest opening-weekend of all time. But, at $240 million, Avatar was not the most expensive movie ever. 2012 ($260 million), Spider-Man 3 ($275 million) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End ($300 million) all cost more. Heck, thanks to 2012 (remember when Roland Emmerich was known for cheap effects that looked expensive?), it was not even the most expensive non-sequel. But expectations are a dangerous thing, so how much Avatar pulled in this weekend will not matter as much as perception of said numbers. If the press jumps on the 'mere' $73 million opening sprint the way they crucified King Kong's $50 million 3-day and $66 million five-day opening, then the film may forever be considered a disappointment no matter how much it grosses in the end. On the other hand, if the number is looked at in a realistic fashion, then we can all acknowledge that this was a pretty darn-impressive opening weekend for a film with major long-term potential. Let's begin…

The much anticipated and debated (amongst film nerds at least) Avatar debuted this weekend with $77 million. That's the second-biggest December opening in history, behind the $77.25 million debut of Will Smith's I Am Legend. In Avatar's defense, I Am Legend was an hour shorter, had a great tag-line that doubled as an easy-to-understand plot synopsis (”The last man on earth is not alone.”), and had the added buzz of the debuting trailers for The Dark Knight. While Warner Bros. held its non-IMAX Dark Knight trailer off the internet until Sunday night, Paramount did Fox no similar favors, releasing its Iron Man 2 teaser online two days before Avatar's opening day. It's also worth noting that Avatar actually opened on fewer screens than many of the top December openings. On the other hand, Avatar debuted in countless 3D and mini-IMAX screens, which increased the general ticket prices to more than overcome the running-time and screen-count disadvantage. For what it's worth, it beat Up's $68 million opening, taking the record for 3D opening weekends. But Avatar did break one very notable record. It is the biggest debut in history for a completely unaffiliated original movie. By that, I mean it was not a sequel, not a franchise adaptation, not a literary adaptation, and not a star-vehicle. It's also racked up $164 million overseas, for a global total of $241 million.

So far, general word of mouth is strong, with those who didn't go in with months of anticipation and expectations pretty much being blown away by the 3D visuals, photo-real special effects work, and large-scale action spectacle (my parents saw it on opening day and loved it). But long-term predictions would be pure guesswork at this point. If we argue that the Saturday and Sunday snowstorms prevented otherwise interested moviegoers from checking out the picture, then we can either expect stronger than normal weekday sales or inflated second-weekend grosses. We'll know more after its second weekend, when it will attempt to use positive buzz to overcome the sure-fire smash weekend debut of Sherlock Holmes. So I'll just toss out the following math: If Avatar performs like the alleged flop King Kong (4.36x its opening weekend), it can expect to gross $335 million. If it performs like Titanic (it won't but let's do the math anyway), it'll do 20.9x times its opening weekend figure for $1.61 billion in the US. Obviously that isn't going to happen, but I will say that January 2010 seems on paper a lot quieter than January 2009. So it won't likely run into the problem that last year's holiday releases did (Marley and Me, Bedtime Stories, Yes Man, and Seven Pounds), where the usual leggy holiday and post-holiday season got kneecapped by uncommonly popular January releases (Gran Torino, Taken, Paul Blart Mall Cop).

If it needs to be said, Avatar was never, ever going to reach the upper-realms of the opening weekend chart. There has never been a December opening that even topped $80 million, let alone $100 million and beyond. Before this weekend, no completely original and star-less movie had opened north of $68 million (The Day After Tomorrow). Furthermore Avatar had to deal with a brutally negative entertainment press that basically made stuff up to make the movie look doomed ('it cost $500 million!' 'the 3D made our previous audiences sick!'). It was a 2.75 hour movie with no stars and a difficult to explain premise, plus 3D visuals that frankly looked so much better in theaters that the teaser, trailer, and photos were a little underwhelming to the uninformed. Topping off its sea of troubles that would have felt more at home in A Serious Man, we had those brutal snowstorms over the weekend. On the other hand, the 'wow, it's great' surprise factor worked wonders for Jurassic Park, as people like myself had absolutely no idea how good it was going to be until those Thursday advance-night showings on June 10th, 1993. Surprise artistic success is always better for long-term box office than expected brilliance. One thing we learned this weekend, never ever bet against James Cameron.

Before I dash, a bit of non-Avatar news (not much of it out there). Did You Hear About the Morgans? opened with just $6.6 million, so it'll get hammered by It's Complicated next weekend. The Blind Side, at $164 million, is now Sandra Bullock's highest-grossing movie and the biggest sports movie of all time. Plus, by next week at the latest, it will be the second-highest-grossing 'based on a true story' movie in history, behind the relative non-fiction of The Passion of the Christ. The Princess and the Frog dropped 49%, bringing its ten-day total to a somewhat disappointing $44 million. It will need all the holiday cheer that it can muster to cross the $100 million mark. A Christmas Carol dropped 49%, as a result of losing its IMAX and 3D screens to you-know-what. Its total stands at $130.8 million, and Disney is hoping to use the Christmas season to get this one past $150 million. Invictus dropped 51% and now stands at $15 million. Any hopes of grossing more than $35 million will depend on Oscar traction in the next month.

Currently, the review embargo isn’t set to lift until the film’s opening day (Friday, the 18th) which, in this case may be counter-productive. Judging by what I overheard after the screening, you can expect to see reviews that run from cautiously positive to rather enthusiastic. One would think that might provide a little boost to the movie.

Here are some more Twitter reactions:

@petershall: “The AVATAR buzz is an understatement. That movie was unbelievable.”

@comingsoonnet” “Okay, about Avatar?…. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! Unbelievable… amazing.”

@MikePereira21: Was blown away by Avatar! For 150 minutes, I was a kid again. Thank you James Cameron! BTW, the groundbreaking 3D was mindblowing.”

@rejects: “I’m not supposed to talk about Avatar… That said, it was a spectacular experience. Like nothing I’ve seen before.”

@markwalters74: “Just saw AVATAR. Not allowed to talk about it yet. Not allowed to say how it’s an amazing visual feast, or that Jimmy C’s still got the gift.”

@dmann11: “Holy effing crap!!! Avatar was FREAKING AWESOME KICK ASS SWEET!!!!!”

@TheGate: “For the record ‘Avatar’ was worth the $400 million, and no it is not even remotely “vomit inducing”.

The Virtual Worlds News reported yesterday that Weblin has launched Weblin Gate.

Weblin Gate will allow avatars to export themselves, albeit in a currently limited capacity, to the World Wide Web.

“Ultimately, there's another plan, another vision. What we try to do is to give everyone a Web avatar from every virtual world,” said Weblin co-founder Heiner Wofl. “While we're doing this, we don't want to steal users. We want to offer a platform based on open protocols. Anyone can run a Weblin server or write a client and anyone can host the avatar for the users. All the virtual worlds could do the same thing.”

“With Weblin we don't try to make a perfect avatar creation tool. We give our users means to create their own avatars on the Web. There are other systems which are much better than our own, like Second Life,” he explained. “Linden produced a really great avatar creation tool and we can regard Second Life as a very sophisticated avatar creator for Weblin. We'd be happy to cooperate with virtual worlds like this. We get more traffic and users. On the other hand, people create and customize their avatars in Second Life. They participate in the Second Life economy. And they participate on the Web with weblin. We don't steal users from Second Life, and we give them new tools.”

“The next step could be that Linden Lab hosts their Web avatars for their users and create them on demand when they're accessed,” he said. “It would take coding on their side and of course there's always much to do in startups, but the way we're integrating avatars on the Web, it's so simple that in just two weeks a good programmer could provide it. Compared to the coding they do in the server platform and networking, it's only 2-4 weeks of a good programmer, but it's management.”

December 21st, 2009  Tagged ,

Not everyone can cook up a storm or even wants to - especially after a hard day at the office. But a home cooked meal will generally have less fat and lower sodium than that delivery meal. Here's some real easy ideas…

It's Sunday so you have a little more time to try something interesting that can actually enhance several meals.  You're going to make a Pesto Sauce - don't freak out, it's easy and not that bad for you.

Wash and rinse fresh spinach - don't worry, I hate spinach too, it doesn't matter trust me.  Cut up enough spinach to fill an 8 oz. cup with the spinach pushed down, fitting in as much as you can.  Pour the spinach into a blender.  Add about 1/4 cup of olive oil, then 1/4 cup of grated parmesan cheese, a pinch of salt, 2 small cloves of garlic (more or less depends on your taste), and 1/4 cup of pine nuts (available in the produce section of any supermarket).  Blend all the items together and slowly add more olive oil until you can see the items mixing at the bottom of the blender.  Stop the blender and use a spoon to push the ingredients further down into the blender so that they continue to blend together.  Blend again and add olive oil as needed.  Continue until the mixture is a bright green.  Pour into a plastic bowl, cover, and refrigerate.  It can also be frozen and defrosted as needed.

Next up - barbeque chicken.  Take about 3 or 4 pounds of cut-up chicken - it can be breasts if you like white meat, it can be a combination of legs and thighs if you prefer dark - and fill a sturdy gallon size plastic bag.  Add 3/4 cup of your favorite barbeque sauce and about 1/4 cup of light soy sauce.  Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.  Seal the bag and shake it up carefully.  Place the bag in a bowl - in case the bag leaks - and let it marinate overnight in the refrigerator.

Now you're finished planning ahead.  It's Sunday and what says Sunday family meal better than a turkey meatloaf?  Mix 1 pound of ground turkey with 3/4 cup of seasoned bread crumbs (alternatively, you can substitute matzoh meal, salt, pepper, garlic salt, parsley, and oregano) plus 1 egg white.  The key to getting an egg white without any of the much unhealthier yolk is to warm the egg in your hand before cracking it open, then use the side of a teaspoon to crack the egg in half.  The entire egg contents will fit in one half an egg shell - just rock the contents from one shell to the other over the ground turkey and bread crumbs and the egg white will drop into the mixture leaving the intact egg yolk in the shell (waste not, want not:  scramble up that egg yolk for your dog - it's good for his coat).  Mix together all the ingredients, then add about an eighth of a cup of BBQ sauce and a pinch of soy sauce to give your turkey loaf some meaty flavor.  Bake in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes to an hour.  Serve with a frozen vegetable of your choice and it's a deliciously simple meal.  And you ought to have enough left over for at least one hearty meatloaf sandwich for lunch during the week.

Monday nights are the worst.  You may still be hung over from the weekend or just hate your job that much.  So you want something easy.  Line a pan with heavy duty aluminum foil and spray with some Pam.  Pour in the chicken that's been marinating overnight and stick into a 375 degree oven for about an hour.  To make sure chicken is done, take the thickest piece and cut into it toward the bone and make sure there's no pink skin or blood.

While the chicken is cooking, take a large red-skinned potato and wash it in the sink.  Boil some water and add the cut up potato.  Red skinned potatoes are great to cook at home because you can eat the skin so you don't have to use a grater.
In about 10 or 15 minutes, you should be able to push a fork through a thick piece of potato.  Strain out the water.  Add to the potatoes, to taste, any combination of butter, salt, pepper, and cheese.  Add about 1/4 cup of milk.  Mash it all together and you have yummy mashed potatoes to eat with your chicken.  Add a bagged salad and Monday's done.

Tuesday night is a great night for pesto.  Boil up the pasta of your choice - surely even you know how to do that.  Mix the pasta and the pesto - dinner's ready.  Add some prepared chicken or use a beef or cheese tortellini to add some protein.  Wow - before you even know it, you've cooked three very different meals three nights in a row.

So what do you do on Wednesday?  Well it is hump day - camel?  No but it is a good night for leftovers and you just happen to have about half your chicken left over from Monday.  I like to serve it up cold with some potato salad and a bagged green salad.

It's Thursday night - if you are a single guy, then since your college days it's been the unofficial beginning of your weekend.  Knowing a weekend of binge drinking, pizza, and other toxins is about to begin, you're most likely to go to the gym on Thursday so stop at the market on your way home and pick up a piece of fresh fish.  That way, when it's midnight and you're scarfing down a pizza with your buddies, you can look back on having eaten healthy.

Friday night, Saturday night:  these are your days off.  I mean, who are you kidding?  You're eating out - you may be out with friends or on a date.  That's OK though.  The upside of being hungover at home is you can start taking steps to prepare next week's meals simply by thinking about your menu, what you may need to defrost, what can be prepared ahead of time…

With a little ingenuity and planning, even the worst cooks can survive cooking for one.

The Lovely Bones Download

The release of the Peter Jackson-directed remake of King Kong opens the door for an examination of an interesting subtextual reading of the original. Like all great art, the original King Kong is open to a multitude of interpretations; there is no single appropriate reading of the text. (You should hear my Marxist version of the tale; that Carl Denham is one disgusting capitalist pig!)

I haven't seen the remake as I write this, but I saw-and appreciate-the Jessica Lange version made in the 70s and it fits the bill of goods I'm selling, so I have little doubt that Jackson's remake will probably be able to fit into this interpretation as well.

What is King Kong? Not the movie, but the character. He's an ape on an island inhabited by black savages. It's an island that, according to the map used in the movie, doesn't appear to be in close promixity to Africa. I'm not sure where Skull Island is, but it's prehistoric. There are dinosaurs and other denizens of our preliterate past. Stuck in this time warp are dark-skinned human beings. And Kong himself is dark. He is their god. He is their Michael Jordan, if you will.

Into this land before time comes a ship filled with far more intelligent-or at least more worldly and educated-white people. They have come with knowledge of modernity. They have cameras! They also have the smarts to outwit the gigantic ape-god after he arrives at his annual-or thereabouts-sacrificial festival.

You see, these people that time forgot, these prehistoric, preliterate black savages toss up one of their womenfolk as a sacrifice to Kong. It's never really made certain what Kong would have done with these sacrifices, but the assumption is that, well, he ate them. I mean it's not like they're around whenever the great white hunter tracks down Ann Darrow to save her. Where are they? Just bones stuck in Kong's teeth, probably.

Anyhoo, this time around, Kong has a new, different kind of sacrifice waiting for him. A blonde, white woman. Not preliterate, not prehistoric, not black. White. Blonde. It's pretty darn apparent that Kong isn't exactly in a hurry to eat the lovely Miss Darrow.

Oh, sure, he may have gotten around to it sooner or later, but in the meantime, it's quite clear Kong has other things on his mind as he strips Fay Wray of her clothing. I'm not exactly sure how this works from a mechanical, size-related point of view of things, but there you are.

Well, the white saviors can't abide this. They have to save the beautiful blonde from the clutches of this giant black ape-god. And save her, they do, though admittedly she's lost a good amount of clothing by the time she comes running back with the great white hunter.

And Kong isn't going to let a good thing get away. Clearly, once he's gone white he's not turning back. He chases them down, only to allow these nimrods to get the better of him. Well, after all, he's big and strong, but Kong's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, if you get my point.

So what do you do when you've got a giant ape captive? Well, like Mr. Burns says, once he's dead you sell monkey stew to the military, but as long as he's alive what else would you do?

Show business. After all, Kong has far too big a strike zone to turn him into a ballplayer and, besides, baseball was restricted to black players back then. And basketball wasn't nearly the big biz sport it is now. So there's only thing left to do with a big black guy.

The business. By which I mean the industry.

Take him back to New York and put him on stage. He doesn't have to do anything. I mean, dear lord man, he's a naked fifty foot tall ape, isn't that enough to bring in crowds! Only he breaks loose! And he goes hunting for Miss Darrow, who's still screaming, but is maybe screaming a little less now. Maybe she's getting used to the big, lovable lug. Maybe he's not so bad.

He shows her a good time; does to a subway car what every person who has ever miss a subway has always wanted to do; gives her a view of New York that no woman has ever seen before. He's even tender with her. Maybe he's not so bad, after all.

Therefore he must die! He must be killed by tiny bullets shot from aircraft flying past him at a great distance. There's Kong, proudly and defiantly waving him arms atop the very symbol of American empire, the Empire State Building. Forget Leonardo, Kong was the true king (kong) of the world! And that just wouldn't do, now would it?

You can see where I'm going with this, can't you? What is Kong? He is the symbol of the white man's fear that big black men will take our women and show them too good a time and we'll lose them forever.

No, seriously, think about it. Everybody knows famous black men only want to date beautiful blondes, right? (All men want to date beautiful blondes, for that matter). Heck, entire movies have been made about how black women have to compete with white women for the best black men.

And deep down inside, every white man knows that a black man can take our women away at a moment's notice. (I'm being facetious, here, but both these points are valid arguments that have been made time and time again). The point is that at the time this was made, black men could still be strung up just for looking at a white woman crossing the street and the white men who committed this heinous act had no fear of punishment.

Irrational racism was rampant at the time the original King Kong was made. It's rampant now. It will always be rampant. And the movie reflects the fear. It's both racist and sexist and racially sexist.

On the one hand, you've got this white fear that black men have such powerful sexual potency that no white woman could ever resist them. On the other hand, you've got the fact that no black woman could ever compete with a white woman for a black man's affections.

Next time you watch the original King Kong, notice a strange little fact. He gets bigger once they take him to New York. On the island, he's really not all that much bigger than the humans. I mean, he's big, yes, but not enormous. Once they get to New York, Kong becomes ridiculously large. It's almost as if he got….

Don't get me wrong. I love King Kong. I think it's a terrific movie and I never get tired of watching it. And I don't believe the racist and sexist undertones of the movie were necessarily intentional. Most critical readings of a work of art usually aren't intentional. But nonetheless it's a valid reading.

"AVATAR" COUNTDOWN: 2 DAYS

Ben Fritz at our sister blog, Company Town, goes inside the numbers on "Avatar" and its opening weekend. This is a bit of bonus coverage in our blue-in-the-face, 30-day countdown…

One of the most expensive movies of all time is poised for a huge box office debut this weekend, though nowhere close to the biggest ever.

"Avatar" will likely gross about $80 million from Friday through Sunday in the U.S. and Canada, according to several people who have seen pre-release public surveys. Thanks to largely positive reviews, however, the people said the movie could easily outperform what polling currently indicates and end up even higher.

People close to the studio said executives are concerned about managing expectations for their costly picture going into the weekend. Fox's domestic distribution president Bruce Snyder said he expects the movie to open to $50 million to $60 million.

Overseas, where the James Cameron-directed 3-D spectacle is opening this week in 106 countries, including every major market except Italy, Japan and China, it will likely sell more than $100 million worth of tickets and could easily collect around $150 million.

That will put "Avatar" among the 20 biggest worldwide launches ever…

I’m so torn on this film; the sci-fi, fantasy, action geek inside of me is screaming “GET TICKETS NOW AND WATCH IT AT MIDNIGHT!”; while the skeptic in me is saying “This just doesn’t look to be all it’s cracked up to be.” Up until the last trailer for Avatar, I still wasn’t sold on it being the sliced bread of movies.  This one featurette really sold me over, however, and I was looking forward to Avatar again.

Now we have this exclusive clip from MTV Movies Blog that shows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) in his avatar form, riding a giant peacock lizard thing with Ney’tiri (Zoe Saldana). As they soar above the clouds of Pandora, enjoying life, they are suddenly attacked by a bigger more ferocious giant peacock lizard thing and have to outrun it in the forest. Enjoy the clip below:

Here is where I become torn again. Avatar will most likely look absolutely crap-my-pants fantastic on an IMAX screen in 3D, but on my laptop screen with my Bose headphones, it just doesn’t ruffle my skirt. I feel like I’m watching a big CGI cartoon episode on Nickelodeon.  I’ll get some Avatar lovers throwing some hate at me for that last comment, but that’s how I feel. Avatar is being sold as a true “theater experience” type of film, but all of these low-resolution video clips are not helping push that agenda. If anything, they are hurting the film by pushing viewers off the fence and away from seeing it.

One thing I’m curious about, that sort of correlates to a theater experience film like Avatar: how will this hurt its “re-watchability” factor? The way a movie stays alive after its theater run is via Blu-ray, DVD, VHS, Digital Copies and so forth. If I watch a movie that I really enjoy and want to watch it again outside of the theater, then Blu-ray and DVD are my only options. If the only way to truly enjoy Avatar is to watch it on a 30-foot screen with a 10,000 watt sound system, then why would I want to purchase a home version?

Will this keep me from plunking down my money and watching and even enjoying Avatar in theaters? No probably not; I’ll be there tomorrow with my popcorn in hand ready to be blown away.

What are your thoughts on the latest clip and how do you think Avatar will translate from the big screen to the small screen?

Avatar finally comes to theaters tomorrow December 18th, 2009.

Menewsha is an online avatar community that was founded in January of 2007, and has grown a lot since. It is in its Alpha stages now, but you can still do a lot of fun things there!

The sidebar of the website is easy to navigate, and contains most of the links you will need. Other useful links are easy to find also, they are located underneath the well drawn banner that is on every page. Menewsha has very good artists working for them, the art around the site is very nice and professional looking.

One of the cool things you can do on the site is create your own customized avatar to use that will represent you on the forums. You are able to choose your avatars hair, eyes and mouth. There are plenty of choices and they are all very well drawn and fun to choose from. You have the option to change these as many times as you want, for no gold, so don't worry about it if you like more than one of the styles of features. Once you choose your avatars features, you can look through the shops to see what clothes you will want in the future, seeing as your avatar is only in their underwear now! I find this good though, because unlike websites that give you starter clothes, at Menewsha you have to work to get gold to buy your first clothes! There are different ways to get gold, currently there is the card game and posting on the forums. If you are playing the card game you can bet your gold and pick a card. If you pick the right card you get double your gold, but if you pick the wrong card, you lose your gold. At the forums, it's less risky trying to get gold. All you have to do there is post! You will find that you get caught up in conversations and make new friends, soon you will have a bunch of gold without even realizing it! With almost 2000 users and many forums to post on you are sure to find someone you get along with! You might even find someone you know, because a lot of people (like me) hop from avatar community to avatar community! Don't forget to post on the newbies forum, when you are a newbie. There will be a ton of people waiting to welcome you!

Now, once you have posted on the forums and played cards until you have enough money, you are ready to buy clothes. It's lots of fun looking through the eight stores of Menewsha that carry all sorts of pixel clothes and cool things in search of the perfect outfit. If you don't find what you want the first time you look, don't worry, either the artists will put something new and fancy in the shop that will catch your eye, or when you go on the forums, you will see another persons avatar wearing something that you like, but didn't seem to see when you were looking through the shops. Looking at other peoples avatars is a good way to imagine how something in the shops would look on your avatar, since there dosn't seem to be a preview feature in the shops yet.

Don't forget to make a bank account also, once you get enough money to do so that is. You can earn a 5% monthly interest rate on gold that you have in the bank.

Journals are an interesting feature of Menewsha. You can make a journal, read other peoples journals and even comment on their journal posts. There are lots of people telling interesting stories in their journals, why not join in?

You will notice that there is a trading link on your sidebar as well. From here you can check out your trading activity that you have been doing with all of the items in your inventory.

So, as you can see, there are tons of fun things to do and many friends to make at Menewsha! Hope to see you there soon!

So A lot of people are looking to watch The Lovely Bones online free or download The Lovely Bones movie. Even even if collecting DVDs and watching movies in theaters may be enjoyable, there are a enormous number of people who need to prefer to watch The Lovely Bones online free. There could be several reasons for that - the price of the DVD collection can be too wealth for numerous fans, ticket prices might be actually pricey, or watching movies online is simply more well-suited for those who spend almost all of their time near a computer system.
